Famous working dogs

Take inspiration from these unique famous working dog names when naming your puppy.

Finally, there are some famous working dogs that you can take inspiration from, and maybe even name your dog after.

Here are their names, and their stories.

  • Balto – a Siberian Husky who has been made a star of many movies. Thos sled dog led the run to Nome, Alaska. That run is better known as “Great race of Mercy.” The reason why this run was particularly important was because the sled dog teams had to deliver a serum that would help with the diphtheria epidemic which was raging in Nome. Balto even has a statue dedicated to him in the Central Park in New York City.
  • Judy – This dog was the only dog prisoner taken hostage in World War II. She was a member of the British Royal Navy. And, aslo, she saved the lives of the sinking Grasshopper ship by transferring the men to safety by holding on to her while swimming. After being taken hostage in Sumatra camp, she alerted the prisoners of any approaching danger at the camp.
  • Owney – The first mascot of the US Postal Service, this mixed breed terrier, was found in front of the Albany post office in New York. He traveled with the postmen across the country to protect the mail bags his bed was near to. 
  • Barry – This is perhaps the most famous Saint Bernard dog. Barry saved more than 40 travelers who got lost in the Great Saint Bernard Mountains in Switzerland. His most famous saving mission? The one when he licked a boy, who almost froze to death, to raise his temperature and carry him to safety. Good boy Barry!
  • Uggie – now this is quite an actor pooch!  This Jack Russel Terrier had  a role in the film “The Artist ” which won the Best Picture Pscar. He also starred in the movie “Water for Elephants”.
